Diastasis Recti Abdominis

Diastasis Recti Abdominis (DRA) refers to a widening of the space in between the two heads of the Rectus Abdominis muscle.

Diastasis is a natural accommodation of the abdominal wall that occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. Diastasis can also occur in people who have never been pregnant.

Physical Therapy is an effective modality for increasing abdominal muscle strength and improving the function of the abdominal wall.

Physical Therapy Treatment of Diastasis Recti Includes:

  • Assessment of the Abdominal Wall in Multiple Positions and with a Variety of Movements

  • Assessment of and Considerations for Umbilical Hernia

  • Instruction in Specific Exercise Progression to Improve Strength and Function

  • Integration of PT into a Client’s Preferred Mode of Exercise or Physical Activity
